24 hours continuous power generation! “Clean + energy storage + peak balancing” more than 10,000 heliostats “bloom” Gobi Desert

Gansu, located in the northwest of my country, is rich in wind and solar energy resources and has excellent development conditions. In order to ensure the safety and reliability of the new energy power system, Gansu Province has established a tower molten salt solar thermal power station in Dunhuang City, which stores solar energy through high-temperature molten salt and releases it in a planned manner on rainy days and at night to achieve 24-hour continuous power generation.

Looking down from the air, 12,000 heliostats surround the 260-meter-high heat absorption tower in the center, “blooming” like sunflowers on the Gobi Desert, covering an area of more than 1.4 million square meters. This is one of the three major links of the solar thermal power station-Sun Island.

Due to the energy storage function of the solar thermal power station, my country has also added a means of allocation in addition to thermal power generation when developing clean energy such as photovoltaics and wind power.

In the first half of 2023, Gansu Province’s installed power generation capacity reached 72.73 million kilowatts, of which new energy was 40 million kilowatts, accounting for 55% of the total installed capacity, a record high.

It is understood that during the “14th Five-Year Plan” period, my country’s solar thermal power generation will strive to achieve an annual increase of about 3 million kilowatts.
